Suicide Prevention Speaker in Yorkshire – The Charlotte Talk

Why The Charlotte Talk Exists

Charlotte wasn’t invisible. She wasn’t reckless or dramatic. She was kind, loyal, intelligent, funny — and deeply lonely in ways most people never saw.

Before her death, Charlotte quietly struggled with a need to feel emotionally safe, feelings of being unseen and replaceable, and a growing reliance on control when her inner world felt chaotic. She carried shame about needing too much and learned to minimise her pain in order to cope. Like many young people and adults, she became highly skilled at appearing “fine” while slowly unravelling inside.

I didn’t lose Charlotte because nobody cared.
I lost her because too many people didn’t know what to look for.

The Charlotte Talk exists to change that.

What The Charlotte Talk Covers

The Charlotte Talk is a trauma-informed suicide prevention talk delivered across Yorkshire, Hull, and surrounding areas, based on lived experience and real safeguarding insight. Using Charlotte’s story — shared with dignity and care — audiences are guided through the realities of hidden distress and how to respond effectively.

The talk explores the psychology of masked mental health struggles, including why people hide pain and how “coping” can look like perfectionism, control, humour, withdrawal, or extreme independence. It reframes so-called attention-seeking as a human need for connection.

Audiences learn about the need for connection and control, why people may choose harmful control over helplessness, how trauma teaches children to self-regulate alone, and why emotional safety matters more than being told to stay strong.

Crucially, the talk highlights early warning signs of suicide risk that are often missed, including subtle behavioural changes, shifts in language, emotional narrowing, sudden calm after distress, giving possessions away, and isolation that can be mistaken for independence.

The session also focuses on what actually helps: how to talk to someone who may be suicidal, what not to say, how to listen without trying to fix, and how to stay connected when someone pushes others away.

The talk ends by showing how lived experience can become protection — how Charlotte’s life continues to save others, and how ordinary people, schools, and services can act as powerful protective factors.
